Arts and Literacy Enhancement Program
At the YMCA we provide quality before and after school programs that encompass our YMCA core values to build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all through love, respect, honesty, responsibility and service.
We provide opportunities in art and literacy development in 10 of our after school programs through our YMCA Arts and Literacy Enhancement Program, which provides classes in both performing and visual arts to children throughout the school year and the summer. We are able to provide this program as a result of a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.
Our arts classes are designed to introduce children to a multitude of art forms providing them with a positive means of self-expression. For many children, participation in the arts is the one subject that they excel in, it helps build their confidence and self esteem and keeps them connected to school.
Art Projects
Through out the school year we have many different artists working with our students to create unique, fun and interesting work. As an example, our students might learn a variety of dance forms, including Hip Hop, Latin American and African. Here are some of the types of activities our students could participate in.
- Painting
- Dance
- Mask Making
- Sculpture
- Theatre
- Folklore
